چکیده

water repellents, antioxidants, and chelators for specific elements, including metals required by wood-decaying fungi such as iron or manganese. Selected laboratory and field exposure results obtained by combining organic biocides with one or more non-biocidal additives are presented in this chapter. Future wood preservative systems, either based on this chapter’s concept or other possible techniques, will likely be used for relatively specific applications rather than today’s one broadspectrum preservative. This will require users of treated wood to be more educated in the future.

Long-Term Outdoor Efficacy Trials of Wood Treated with Organic Biocides and Co-Added Non-Biocidal Additives

Wood preservatives for residential applications are moving towards totally-organic systems. However, organic biocides are relatively expensive and are" biodegraded over the long service life expected from treated wood. To address these two deficiencies we have employed low-cost and benign additives that enhance the efficacy of organic biocides against wood-destroyiog organisms, and/or rednce bi...

Environmentally Friendly Wood Preservative System Based on Polymerized Tannin Resin-boric Acid for Outdoor Applications♣

Boron compounds are used as wood preservatives as they are both fungicide and insecticide, relatively inexpensive and environmentally acceptable. Nevertheless, in the field of wood protection, borates are only used for indoor non-exposed applications or in association with other biocides, due to their main disadvantage of being readily leachable from treated wood. To overcome this problem, bori...

Laboratory leaching tests on treated wood according to different harmonised test procedures

Background: Laboratory leaching tests on treated wood were performed during a European robustness study in the framework of the validation of a tank leaching test procedure that has been proposed for construction products in order to determine the potential release of dangerous substances which can be transferred to soil and groundwater. The release of substances has to be determined also for m...

Preparation of Zirconium Phosphate Nanoparticles and Its Application in the Protection of Aldehydes

A novel method for the preparation of α-zirconium phosphate (ZrP) nanoparticles as an eco-friendly and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst was studied. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used as the organic matrix which produced a better dispersion of ZrP nanoparticles. The catalyst was characterized by several physico-chemical techniques such as ICP-OES, XRD, TPD-NH3, pyridine-FTIR, BET, FTIR, TGA, S...

Solvent-free direct ortho C-acylation of phenolic systems by methanesulfonic acid as catalyst

The use of methanesulfonic acid as a Brønsted acid for direct ortho-acylation of phenols and naphthols proves to be a convenient, more general and direct route to various hydroxyaryl ketones. The route is regioselective, leading to ortho C-acylated products in satisfactory to high yields in most cases. The solvent free reactions described below exhibited environmentally benign in terms of faste...
